Sing, Sang, Sung – “I’m Not Afraid Of The Dark” By Lauren Krothe

I don’t get too much of an opportunity to listen to new music these days. Partly because I’ve decided to listen to other things instead most of the time, and my time at work is spent listening to audiobooks if anything.

However, every once in a while, I will manage to listen to a new song. Usually because someone puts it on Facebook or Twitter and I spare a couple minutes to check it out. This time, that artist is one Lauren Krothe, who is almost certainly someone you’ve never heard of before.

She’s got a Kickstarter going for her first album. She’s clearly a skilled singer, and has a very operatic tone in her voice, particularly in the song she’s singing during her Kickstarter video. I think it’s fantastic that she’s doing this for herself, and I think IndieGoGo and Kickstarter and wonderful ideas for people to create in ways not available to them before. I’ve been thinking of possibly doing it myself for a couple of projects, but we’ll wait and see first.

Anyway, I don’t actually like the singing she’s doing in her Kickstarter video as much as the other song on the page. It’s not bad, it just has a quality that I find a bit strange, one I’m not 100 percent into. But I do think it’s good.

Her song “I’m Not Afraid of the Dark,” however, is just fantastic. Great singing, very catchy, macabre yet fun lyrics… I really really like it. I think an album of hers would be worth listening to. I think she can bring some new, interesting sounds into the world, and I am nothing if not a big fan of bringing new art into the world. I’ll even tolerate art I just can’t stand for the most part, because art is what makes us human.

Give it a listen. I think you might enjoy it.

“I’m Not Afraid of the Dark” – Lauren Krothe

I’m not afraid of the dark
But I been afraid they’re all seeing
The mark of the beast
Underneath
The flush in my cheek
Sometimes I can’t even speak

I’m not afraid of the dark
But I’m afraid I might wind up on the chart
Of the stars that went out
Smothered with doubt
Crushed by the weight of false testimonials

I’m not afraid of old age
I never was one who seemed cut out for grace
And my face may be bent
Wrinkled and rent
Contorted before I turn forty

I’m not afraid of old age
I’m only afraid that the words on the pages
In the book of life
Will cover the strife
Instead of the breadth of my hopes and glories
Same old story
Ja…

How you gonna shoot the moon
Locked inside your living room?
How you gonna shoot the moon
Locked inside your living room?

Train
Take me away again
Aeroplane
Carry me away again
Again
Again

I’m not afraid of old age
I never was one who seemed cut out for grace
And my face may be bent
Wrinkled and rent
Contorted before I turn forty

Good thing I’m not afraid of old age
I’m only afraid that the words on the pages
In the book of life
Will cover the strife
Instead of the breadth of our hopes and glories
Same old story
Ja…
